Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: Two Views.

July 16, 2009

The Nurse:

Warning: this is your Nerd alert. If you can’t handle this level of nerdiness I recommend you skip ahead.

After months of anticipation and watching the days count down to zero on my Google homepage…….. At long last, July 15th and the theatrical

Mom and I at the Bookstar midnight book sale for Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows

Mom and I at the Bookstar midnight book sale for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

release for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! (Wild cheers!) I am a big  fan of the Potter-verse, so I was super excited to see this movie. The usual preparation for viewing a Harry Potter movie on opening day/night back home is as follows:

  • Buy tickets for the movie at least 48 hours in advance, if not earlier.
  • Make sure you have the 3-5 hours before showtime set aside for waiting in line for the movie with all the other uber-fans.
  • Pack a snack for waiting in line…preferably one involving HP candy.
  • Dust off your Harry Potter costume complete with wand, tie and robe. (Never mind the 115 degree heat, being in character is more important! Besides, how will everyone know what house you are in if you are not wearing your uniform?)
  • Bring your camera. There are always lots of photo ops on opening night.

I wasn’t sure if I would still be in Bournemouth for the opening so I did not buy HP tickets way in advance. I ended up buying them online the day before for the 8 pm showing, and I thanked my lucky stars that the show wasn’t sold out yet. Dave gets off work at 4:00PM, so I figured that would be just about perfect. Four hours should be enough time to walk into town, print out my ticket confirmation, grab some food and get a good place in line at the theater….but just barely. Unfortunately I didn’t plan ahead for the movie when I packed for this trip, so no costume this year.  It felt a little strange.  I considered drawing the lightening bolt scar on my forehead in eye pencil but decided that would just look silly. I ended up having to settle for my muggle clothes.

We ended up leaving the house at 5:00, which was later then I liked. My 4 hour buffer was suddenly a 3 hour buffer.  I just hoped that the line wasn’t outside the theater yet.  We finally arrived at the theater at 5:45, and I didn’t see a line outside so I felt a little better. I ran up to the box office, grabbed the tickets and made a B-line for the theater. When we stopped to have our tickets checked the guy looked at us really funny.

  • Ticket Dude: Can I see your tickets please?
  • The Nurse: Sure.
  • Ticket Dude: You realize this showing of Harry Potter starts at 8:00 right?
  • The Nurse: Yeah it’s okay. We wanted to get here early so we would have a good place in line.
  • Ticket Dude: Okay…..I guess you could wait inside then.
  • The Nurse: Thanks!

At this point I was terribly confused. There was NO ONE there. NO line.  Nothing.  You could have heard a pin drop. We were t-minus 2 hours until the movie and it was just Dave and I waiting in an empty hallway. It was like an alternate reality. Dave suggested that since no one was there we should go wait outside where it was cooler, but I still felt like someone was playing a trick on me, so told Dave that he could wait outside but I insisted that I wait at the head of my imaginary line. People didn’t show up until 7:05 and when they did I noticed something else that I found strange. NO ONE was in costume! How is it, that every weekend since we arrived, we have seen people running around Bournemouth in costumes, but not a single person dresses up for this?? England is strange I tell you. I figured that Harry would get a better reception then this, especially in England! I had one final objective, for the evening, get into the theater as quickly as possible so I could get the perfect seats. They finally let people into the theater at 7:45. Dave tells me there was a guy tearing tickets at the entrance. Apparently he gave me a really strange look when I blew passed him at the speed of light….but I didn’t notice, I had my eye on the prize.

So how was the movie? Awesome!! It lacked a lot of the Tom Riddle character development from the book and felt a little splotchy in places, but I guess you just can’t fit that much story into 2.5 hours. It was still great.

The Nerd:

So, here is my Harry Potter background. I read the first two books. I had my complaints about them. Didn’t find enough interest to keep reading though. I watched the first two movies several times as well. Living with Courtney I couldn’t really escape them completely. The 3rd and 4th movies I think I saw once each plus or minus some scenes here and there. The 5th movie I hadn’t seen at all. On Wednesday I had Courtney update me as to what was in each of the movies.

Starting a bit before I got off work Courtney started watching the 5th movie, which I hadn’t seen, but soon enough it was 5 and we hadn’t finished the movie and it was past time when Courtney said we needed to go. So we left in quite a hurry. Courtney would not stop to hug me. She practically pulled me down the road. She made us split up so she could go print out the tickets and I could get a place in line and then I would leave line to go get dinner when she got there. I cheated and stopped at “The Chippy” on the way to get some fish and chips. We then met up at the nearly deserted theater.

Courtney was worried that we would be too late (too late for what I do not know, we had already purchased tickets.) When we went in to the theater the guy looked at our tickets and told us that the ticket was for 8. “Yes” Courtney replied, not phased. He told us that we could go wait inside. There was not a single person. Not one. The lunacy doesn’t end there. We did not have drinks yet, but Courtney would not leave for fear of losing her place in “line.”  I convinced her that we should leave get drinks and candy. When we came back a second ticket checker looked at us like we were crazy and wasn’t going to let us in. Courtney told him that the other guy had let us wait inside, so he did too. No one showed up for like a full hour. It was only about 45 minutes till that people really started showing up, and even then, not a single one in costume. We watched the people from the previous show leave as well. Not a single costume amongst them either. Not even a Griffendorek tie.

The movie itself? Eh. I am sure there were things that I was missing, but the movie was easy enough to follow. It felt like it was waiting for a director’s cut 10 DVD set. There were scenes that seemed rather abrupt and almost non-sequitorish. I imagine that I was the only one there though who had not read the books 10 times or seen all of the movies all the way through. I was entertained enough though. Now how’s that for a review?

London Weekend

July 16, 2009
Trafalgar Square in the Rain

Trafalgar Square in the Rain

We went off to London last weekend.

Saturday:

We got up super early (5:50am on a Saturday!) and pulled in our clothes from the line which had been rained on. We trudged our way to the bus station where caught our bus to London and made an attempt to sleep. We arrived at Victoria Station at around 9 and after gathering some maps we made our way to Buckingham Palace. I inquired, but it is not currently for rent. We then made our way through St. James Park to Parliament Square, home of the Parliament building, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. And, yes Mom we went in to Westminster Abbey, even though it cost us the equivalent of $50. The church itself is ok, but it ain’t got nothin on so many churches in Italy. The neat part was the tombs of Kings, authors and scientists.

Like, I hope it isnt haunted Scoob!

Like, I hope it isn't haunted Scoob!

A couple of hours later we quieted our growling bellies and had ourselves a feast at a noodle bar just the other side of the Thames River. We saw some replicas of famous cars Bullitt, KITT and the Mystery Machine from the Movieum movie museum. As were going to make our way to the Tate Modern museum, but we were already nearly exhausted and the Salvador Dali Museum across the street won over in the end. It was a quite awesome choice and I am glad we went. The Tate Modern will have to wait for another day. Once we were done walking all day through 2 museums with backpacks on we decided to walk some more, this time in the rain, and we went to Trafalgar Square. Courtney wanted to take a picture on top of the giant lion statues, but they were too slippery for her due to the rain. We walked back to St. James Park and sheltered from the rain under a large tree and watched a band play before we finally made our way back to the Victoria Bus Station to catch our bus to Stevenage.

Sunday:

Stevenage is a small town to the north of London. It is where our friend Vrinda lives with her Husband George and her little wookie Percy. We did all sorts of reminiscing type of things. We also went on a drive through the beautiful countryside on some roads that would be barely wide enough for one car, let alone two. We also went to a park, got ice creams, watched British comedies on DVD and just hung out.

Monday:

Courtney made her way into London early in the morning to take her manual handling course for her nursing certification. She also visited a hospital she would work at if we end up in London. She also went to her travel nursing agency and met people there in the flesh after a years worth of emails and phone calls. David just did his usual working thing, but this time from someone else’s office. Exciting and exotic. Later that evening David took the Bus back into London where we both had a light dinner at a cafe and then made our way back home to Bournemouth and the comfort of our bed instead of the floor we had been sleeping on.

Weed and Thistle Soda

July 16, 2009

Fizz Time soda. Per the label it is made from dandelion and burdock. I usually do not eat dandelions or burdocks, but I decided to give this a shot. I did not even know what burdock was until after I bought this drink. Apparently its a thistle. Thats right, this is made of weeds through and through. How did it taste? Something like a light herbal root beer with a slight bubble gum taste. Although it is passable, I would not recommend it, and Courtney liked it so much she did not even want to drink past her first sip.

Jersey

July 8, 2009

There was a lot of fuss about what we would do over this Independence Day weekend.  Dave had a three, possibly four day weekend because of the holiday, so we figured it would be a good opportunity to do something big and exciting! Among the ideas were catching some rays in Barcelona, seeing the French riviera from Marseilles, or laying out on the beautiful beaches in Dubrovnik….Unfortunately we waited to long to get good deals on airfare so we had to settle for somewhere a little closer to home.

Cows VS Guidos

We took a ferry to Jersey. Turns out you don’t have to go far away to have a good time.

Friday

We started our day with a leisurely bus ride to Poole where we would catch our Condor Ferry.

The last pub before france

The last pub before france

Poole seems to be a very livable town. Courteous too.  As a public service announcement for beer enthusiasts, the “last pub before France” was clearly marked. Our ferry ride was relatively painless and we arrived in St Helier, Jersey in the late afternoon. We checked into our B&B, Bay View Guesthouse (Well, it used to have a bay view, but now there is a luxury condominium going in across the street. They will have to change their name to Condo View in a few months), and headed back into the main part of town to find some dinner.  As in England, most pubs and inexpensive eateries don’t serve food in the evenings or close around 5:00, so we were left with expensive steak houses and French affairs to choose from. Since Jersey is known for it’s seafood and it was looking to be an expensive night anyway, we decided to do it up right! We went to the local fish market restaurant and ate the largest platter of crustaceans that that ocean has to offer. We ate until we were absolutely stuffed. If you were to cut us open you would have seen nothing but mussels. (These are the jokes people!) After cleaning up with all 6 wet wipes and resisting the temptation to slurp down the seafoody broth that remained on our dish, we made our way back to the ranch and drifted off to sleep with visions of calamari rings dancing in our heads.

Saturday

After our big English breakfasts, we headed into town for our day of sightseeing.  First on the agenda was the Jersey War Tunnels. The tunnels were built during World War II to serve as first a munitions store then an underground hospital for the Nazi solders during their occupation of Jersey. The tunnels currently serve as a memorial/museum dedicated to the Jersey locals who died during the war and describing what life was like during the occupation on the Island. Before you enter you are given an ID card of someone who lived during that time. Courtney was given June Sinclair, she died in a concentration camp. Not sure what happened to Dave’s person.  The tunnels were very cold and during the first few exhibits you would hear the sound of a bomb exploding overhead at random intervals.

Next, we went to the La Mare winery for a tour and a tasting. In addition to wine, La Mare makes: chocolates, spreads, apple brandy and Jersey cream liquor (those Jersey cows must be a happy bunch cause that is some good stuff). We picked up a spread called “black butter” that is amazing! We will be sad when it is gone. Luckily, they have a website so if we get really desperate we can always get more. The vineyard is also home  to two spotted miniature ponies named “bubbles” and “fizz”. They had a nice little enclosure in the orchard and seemed content to eat grass all day long.

At the start of the foot path

At the start of the foot path

After La Mare, we decided to do the 2 mile hike along the cliffs that run between the vineyard and one of the many beaches. The views were stunning and the water looked crystal clear. Courtney was fantasizing about scuba diving around some of the coves.  During our hike we picked up runaway. His name was Hardin. This little dog followed us for the whole 2 mile hike. When we reached the end of the trail, Hardin and by proxy us, met a Mom and two kids from Minneapolis (small world) who helped us get the dog back to his owners.

Sunday

We once again ate up a big tasty English breakfast, then headed to the beach for some much needed relaxation after being on our feet all Saturday. We took  a badminton set with us and trash talked mightily about who would kick who’s butt. Truthfully, neither of us could hit the broad side of a barn but that is not the point, and we didn’t get much of a chance to show off our badminton prowess anyway. The first shuttle cock was destroyed after 2 hits when the old rubber tip cracked off and by the time we got the second shuttle cock out to the beach, the wind made playing rather difficult. When David went to hit it, it would either blow directly back at him or get stuck in the loosely strung racket. After David managed to get himself a little sunburn on the back of his ankles (looks slightly like pink socks) we decided to go find some food.

A bit of after dinner reading

A bit of after dinner reading

There was a French farmers market happening that weekend in one of the main squares, so we headed there for lunch. David had a lovely sausage on a baguette and Courtney had a croque monsieur.  We also found dinner at the market, a trio of French cheeses and an aged pork and garlic sausage.  We left the market with our meat and cheese in hand and went to the Cock and Bottle pub next to the state building. David consumed a very fine local bitter and half of a cask ale (the cask ale was ordered first, but not enough for a full pint, so they gave us a full beer and let us have the half beer for free.) Courtney consumed a crisp cider and we watched the pigeons and gulls in the square. Once our pints were drained we wondered around town and found ourselves some real Jersey ice cream to lick at. We stopped at a local grocery store to grab some grapes, wine and a baguette to complement our cheese and sausage and complete our dinner. We dined leisurely on the front patio of the guest house and read our books.  After dinner we took a walk along the bay at sunset before returning back to the hotel and settling in with a DVD of Alice in Wonderland.

Monday

One last breakfast (we made good use of the second B in B&B), and then we were off, walking into town to catch our ferry back home. This ferry was to be longer then our ferry to Jersey, which David, book in hand, did not mind. Courtney it turns out did mind the extra length (and extra waviness) of the return journey as she decided to experiment with a new fad called seasickness. Eventually, Courtney was able to fall asleep on David although, the Marmot label from his jacket managed to make a perfect imprint on her cheek while she slept….And that is the story of how Courtney became Marmot Face.

Marmot Face...not sure I like the new pet name.

Marmot Face...not sure I like the new pet name.

The End.

…or is it?

Yes, yes it is.

Face Lift

July 6, 2009

Fear not loyal readers, for this continues to be the home of A Nurse and A Nerd, it just looks a little different.  You like?

Think of it as Joan Rivers…it may have had a face lift (or 12) but it still retains it’s comedic talent.

Going to Jersey

July 3, 2009
jersey

This is not our picture, our pictures are better than this.

We are taking a (relatively) quick ferry ride to Jersey this weekend. Think beaches, cows and St Helier, not turnpikes, the Sopranos and Newark. It is a Brittish Crown Dependency (not an actual part of the UK) off of the north coast of France. Apparently it is the best of both worlds, loving both a good croissant in the morning and a nice spot of tea in the afternoon. We will be sure to update you with photos of our shenanigans when we get back on Monday. Unfortunately I do not believe there will be a fireworks display this weekend, but who knows, maybe we can convince them to declare independence tomorrow and celebrate with us.

Windsurfing Update.

June 30, 2009

Erica and I post windsurfing.

Erica and I post windsurfing.

Windsurfing went significantly better for Erica and myself during session two.  We are really getting the hang of it!  When we were finished Erica said “Wow! Why was I having so much trouble last time?? That was easy!” and I agreed with her.  By the end of yesterday’s session, I could stay on the board and steer in the direction that I wanted to go.  A vast improvement.  Can’t say that I managed to stay totally dry, but I did spend more time on the board then not. In fact, the only problem that we had was the tide.  When our session started at 1000, the tide was out as far as it could go…remember when I said that you could walk for miles along the sandbar?  Well that’s what we did, hauling our windsurfing rigs behind us.  It was unpleasant.

My tan is bad, It's bad-you know it! (bad bad-really, really bad)

My tan is bad, It's bad-you know it! (bad bad-really, really bad)

I didn’t even feel very sore or tired after this go round…..until this morning anyway.  My shoulders and my upper arms are very sore, followed by my legs and lower back. Still a great workout. I have funny tan lines too.  I was wearing a long sleeve wetsuit and I forgot to sunscreen my hands, so now it looks like I tanned my hands to look like gloves in memory of Michael Jackson or something.

I just have to find a place to windsurf when I get back home.  Don’t want to lose my new skill!

A Sandy Sunday

June 28, 2009
Life's a beach

Life's a beach

On Sunday, Vrinda, one of our old friends, her husband George and her 3 year old son Percy (a.k.a. Chewbacca) came out for the day to visit us. After what seemed like ages trying, we finally found a parking space close to the pier. I guess there is an advantage to us not having a car and walking everywhere, we never have to worry about parking.

We stopped for lunch at a chain called Pizza Express that is all over in the U.K. and has pretty good pizza as well.  Vrinda and George are on a quest to visit all of the Pizza Expresses. Good luck to them on that tasty journey.

After that we made our way down to the beach which was the most crowded I have yet seen it even though it was cloudy. There were boat races taking place which were a bit interesting. There was some sand castling. George built a pyramid (complete with connecting tunnel) which David used his psychic powers to help align with Orion. Courtney and Vrinda decided to go with a larger tiered style sand ziggurat. Percy helped with both, but his creative energies were a bit too unrefined for the intricacies of sand castle building, which is serious work.

After that we went back to the ranch, had us some pasta for dinner, watched some interesting dancing on youtube and bid each other fair well until we meet again when we visit London later this month.

Windsurfing, Not as Easy as it Looks.

June 28, 2009

On Saturday, Erica and I spent 3 hours in the Poole harbor learning how to windsurf.

Look Mom! I can windsurf!

Look Mom! I can windsurf!

The peninsula half of the harbor is ideal for learning water sports because it is one giant sandbank and you can walk in knee deep water for about a mile. That part of the harbor has a clever name….It’s called Sandbanks, and it is one of the most expensive places to live in the UK.

So, how did I do?  Lets just say that I spent more time with my butt in the water then I did with my feet on the board, but all in all not to bad. I stayed on long enough for Dave to snap some nice pictures and I could steer a little by the end of the session. I have to say, it was way more exausting  then I thought it would be and it was quite the workout!  I exausted and sore when I got home and achy for a nice chunk of today.  The plan is for Erica and I to spend 3 more hours practicing tomorrow.  Wish us luck!
